VoIP and Packet loss issues

VoIP and Packet loss issues

VoIP is highly sensitive to packet loss, which can significantly impact call quality and even disrupt the ability to make or receive calls. Packet loss is the largest reason we have for support calls for our VoIP service.

What Is Packet Loss?

Every internet activity relies on the smooth transfer of "packets" — small units of data. Packet loss disrupts this flow, leading to noticeable issues in real-time communication such as video calls and VoIP phone systems. While browsers can resend missing packets, live interactions can suffer delays or distortions that can‘t be corrected on the fly.

Common causes of packet loss include:

Signs of Packet Loss

Businesses might unknowingly experience packet loss, but telltale signs include:

  • Dropped calls during VoIP communication
  • Distorted audio or video in live meetings
  • Timeouts or inconsistencies in command prompts

To detect packet loss:

  1. Open a command prompt on your PC.
  2. Type: Ping 8.8.8.8 -t
  3. Monitor the responses:
    • A reply like Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time=8ms TTL=118 indicates normal activity.
    • Timeouts (Request timed out) or high time values (e.g., time=128ms) suggest packet loss.

Troubleshooting Packet Loss

“It’s crucial for business owners to understand their networks and address issues promptly. Often, packet loss isn’t the provider’s fault but stems from internal network challenges.”

— Juliet Moran, TelephoneSystems.Cloud

Follow these steps to diagnose and resolve packet loss:

  • Update Hardware and Software: Ensure routers, switches, and other network equipment are updated with the latest firmware.
  • Identify Recent Changes: Network modifications, like duplicate IP addresses, can trigger packet loss. Pinpointing recent changes can help locate the problem.
  • Monitor Bandwidth Usage: Viruses or insufficient bandwidth can lead to packet loss. Scan devices regularly and consider alternative connections, such as 4G or satellite, in low-bandwidth areas.
  • Optimize Wi-Fi Networks: Overloaded Wi-Fi networks can experience interference. Prioritize wired connections where possible, and minimize the number of devices connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Check Wired Connections: While wired networks are more stable, damaged cables can cause packet issues. Test and replace deteriorated wires.
  • Use Network Monitoring Tools: Employ online tools to track performance, detect anomalies, and pinpoint bottlenecks causing packet loss.
  • Contact Your Internet Provider: If issues persist outside your internal network, contact your provider for troubleshooting. They can check external wiring and resolve cabinet-level problems.
