SIP ALG and VoIP

SIP ALG is a tick box setting on most routers that cause stability issues with a VoIP Phone system.

By default many routers come with this ticked, but it‘s a simply task to solve. Just login to your router, look for the SIP ALG tick box, untick it, save and your issues will probably be resolved.

Symptoms of SIP ALG

More often than not, SIP ALG will highlight itself by causing the following symptoms:

  1. Calls dropping when another all comes in.
  2. Only one phone working
  3. Problems transfering calls
  4. Problems with people not being able to hear you

Why does SIP ALG cause the issue

The setting causes your router to send the packets to a single point for all the VoIP traffic. But if you have more than one device, the router doesn‘t know which device to send it to, so it chooses at random where to send the voice traffic. This causes the voice traffic packets to go to the wrong device and result in packet loss.

Disabling the setting on your router will resolve the issue. For some assistance on a technicolor router, read our guide.
