POE Issues

VoIP can experince strange and unusual behaviour casued by a POE switch. You may choose to use a POE switch instead of power supplies to power your hardware VoIP phones over your network.

However, POE Swtiches can have different levels of output power and sometimes depending on the number of devices run using the POE switch, the switch may not have enough power to correctly run the phone.

When this happens, the phone, while appearing to look powered on, start to behave in an odd manner. It is often the case that the phone will randomly reboot for no reason. Sometimes the phone will looked powered on, but when pressing the buttons on the phone, nothing happens. Sometimes the phone drops calls at random. The symptoms of an VoIP phone system having an POE switch issue is usually pinpointed by a selection of random behaviour when using a POE.

What is a POE Switch?

A PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch is a network switch that delivers both data and electrical power to network devices over a single Ethernet cable. This technology eliminates the need for separate power supplies and electrical wiring for network devices such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points, and other IoT devices.
