Tech jargon businesses need to know for 2026

That’s according to tech expert Juliet Moran from TelephoneSystems.Cloud, who has looked at some of the technological advances small businesses need to be aware of.

Recent statistics from the Office for National Statistics reveal that nearly a quarter (23%) of businesses are using some form of artificial intelligence, up from 9% two years ago.

For those adopting AI, four percent have seen headcount decrease as a result, with early adopters benefiting from streamlined systems and processes.

As we enter 2026, advancements in AI tools and improvements in security will continue to grow. If businesses fail to keep up, they risk falling behind.

“Tech advancements are moving at pace and for businesses to compete, they need to keep up. That could be about utilising AI to improve and streamline processes, or focusing on improving cyber security.

Expect to be discussing generative AI, unified customer data layers and AI agents with colleagues. These can all work together to improve business processes and enhance the customer journey.

Addressing the threat of cyber crime should be high on the list of business priorities too. In 2026 expect to hear preemptive cybersecurity and zero-trust security come up in conversation. Taking these threats seriously and being able to identify and prevent cyber crime, particularly when holding sensitive customer data, will be crucial.”

Tech terms businesses need to know for 2026

Generative AI

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new, original content by learning patterns from existing data. This can include text, images, music, video or code. Unlike traditional AI, which analyses existing data, generative AI produces something novel.

AI Agents

AI agents are autonomous systems designed to perform complex tasks and communicate with other services with minimal human input. Think of them as virtual co-workers that can plan, use external tools, learn from experience and adapt strategies in real time.

Preemptive Cybersecurity

Preemptive cybersecurity focuses on anticipating, identifying and neutralising cyber threats before they occur or cause harm. With high-profile breaches making headlines, this proactive approach is becoming essential.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication adds extra layers of security beyond just a password. It requires two or more verification methods, such as:

  • Something you know – a password or PIN
  • Something you have – a code sent to your phone
  • Something you are – fingerprint, face scan or voice recognition

API (Application Programming Interface)

An API is a set of rules that allows software applications to communicate with each other. For small businesses, APIs can boost efficiency, reduce costs and improve customer experience by connecting systems seamlessly.

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)

Retrieval-augmented generation enhances large language models by giving them access to external, up-to-date information before generating a response. This improves accuracy, reduces errors and ensures responses are based on verifiable, current data.

Zero-Trust Security

Zero-trust security assumes no user or device should be trusted automatically, whether inside or outside the network. Access requests are verified using strict checks on identity, device health and context, helping protect data and support secure cloud-based working.

Unified Customer Data Layer

A unified customer data layer collects, organises and standardises customer information across a business. This provides a complete customer view, including website activity, interaction history and purchasing behaviour.
