Routers fail in widespread “Cyber attack”

Experts claim routers made by Taiwanese technology firm DrayTek may have been compromised at the weekend with many organisations only discovering the issue when they came into work on Monday.

The company manufactures the most popular routers in the world amongst the SME sector and many of those affected by the issue are small and medium sized companies.

UK experts such as Juliet Moran from telephonesystems.cloud say the issue affected businesses around the globe and left IT and comms firms in chaos as unpatched routers went offline.

She said: “The attack targeted SSL settings on the router causing it to go into a reboot loop, stopping the internet from working for many businesses around the world, from Australia to Thailand and large numbers in the UK.

“Many older routers were unable to be patched, with the suggested fix stopping key functions from working, so they have now had to be replaced, causing a rush of companies buying new routers this week to get themselves back up and running.

“Keeping routers updated to the latest firmware editions is something businesses should be aware of, and when they get too old for updates, it’s time to get a new one.

“Many firms know to keep their virus protection and windows versions up to date to protect against attacks, but often forget the key element keeping their internet up and running – their router.”

DrayTek released a statement after their own website went offline as it experienced huge levels of traffic as people searched for help and attempted to download firmware updates.

DrayTek’s statement acknowledged that the firm had received reports of their routers disconnecting unexpectedly and offered affected users tips on how to troubleshoot the issue, such as disabling SSL VPN.
