How digital tech could revolutionise living for older generations

The move towards digital connectivity also presents an opportunity to integrate smart technology into homes to improve safety and provide reassurance for families.

This comes as the UK continues its transition from old analogue phone systems to digital technology, which will see landlines operating over a broadband connection.

The transition to digital was originally due to complete this year but is now expected to be fully operational by January 2027.

Moving from analogue to digital makes it easier to integrate smart technology with modern systems. Digital infrastructure provides the foundations for data collection, communication and interoperability — all essential components of smart technology.

Juliet Moran believes the UK should be exploring how smart technology can be integrated into the homes of older people as a way of future-proofing healthcare and social care provision.

She says smart technology could help ease the burden on carers while giving families peace of mind that their loved ones are safe at home.

“The priority in switching from analogue to digital has to be ensuring the older generation are moved across with minimal disruption.

This is particularly important when it comes to telecare alarms, but equally for many older people their landline phone connects them to family and allows them to access essential services, such as contacting their GP.

We then need to seriously consider how we integrate smart technology into the homes of older people to increase their safety and reassure close family.

There is so much additional support that could be offered, and if everyone is digitally connected by 2027, it makes sense to look at the bigger picture and explore how we can use the technology we already have to enable people to live longer in their own homes.

Among the support that should be considered are smart watches with fall detection, allowing families to be alerted automatically if a loved one falls. Smart speakers could be integrated into the home and activated using voice commands, while CCTV could be installed so visitors can be monitored.

Voice activation could also be used to control lighting and power sockets, and internal CCTV could be installed, particularly for those living with dementia.”

Juliet added: “Despite some reluctance to embrace the digital transition, it could provide a lifeline for the ageing population in the years to come.”
