Warning - Christmas lights could slow down WiFi

Juliet Moran from TelephoneSystems.Cloud has issued the warning as households begin decorating for the festive season.

Older or poorly made Christmas lights may contain electrical components that emit electromagnetic interference. This can disrupt WiFi signals, particularly when lights are positioned too close to a router.

She also advises that WiFi connections are typically under much heavier use over the holidays, meaning now is the ideal time to prepare and avoid unnecessary issues.

“The last thing you want at Christmas is a laggy WiFi connection, especially if you’ve got a houseful of visitors, kids, and are streaming Christmas movies.

There are some really easy fixes to keep connected and checking your Christmas lights are up to the job is one of the first. If they are really old, it may be time for an upgrade. Other simple things to check are the placement of your router, the direction of its aerials, and making sure it’s not covered by anything – especially anything metal.

Your WiFi will take a battering over Christmas with everyone at home and visitors popping in. Your lights and decorations may play a small role in slowing speeds, but do bear in mind the number of devices using it. Prioritising those that require a stable connection, or using a wired connection, can help.

It’s worth taking a few minutes ahead of the festivities to check everything’s in working order, moving your router if you need to, to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

Juliet’s advice to avoid WiFi problems this Christmas

Move your router

If your Christmas lights are near your router, consider moving either the lights or the router. Increasing the distance between them reduces the chance of interference.

Change the WiFi channel

WiFi routers operate across a range of channels. If you’re experiencing interference, log in to your router and try moving the WiFi channel up or down a few numbers to see if connectivity improves.

Don’t cover the router

Avoid draping tinsel or decorations over your router. Covering it, especially with metal decorations, can block or weaken the signal.

Check your Christmas lights

If your lights are old or have been inherited, it may be time for an upgrade. Newer lights are generally better quality and less likely to interfere with WiFi signals.

Double-check your router

Before blaming your Christmas decorations, make sure all router cables are securely connected and in good working order.

Prioritise devices

With lots of devices connected at once, prioritise those that need a stable connection to keep everyone online and happy.

Use a wired connection

Where possible, use wired connections for devices such as smart TVs and games consoles. These use a lot of bandwidth, and keeping them off WiFi can improve performance for other devices.
